Barbaro has problem with left foot

01/10/2007 - Kennett Square, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Retired Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro has been experiencing discomfort in his left hind foot, the same foot that contracted laminitis during his recuperation at the New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

It is being reported that Barbaro has severe discomfort after a new cast was applied to the foot. A foot cast was applied on January 3 by Dr. Scott Morrison. Dr, Morrison is an equine podiatry expert from the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

"This cast was applied with the goal of starting to help re-align his coffin bone properly in that foot," Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery, said on Tuesday. "His comfort on that foot has been good since the procedure."

However, because of the discomfort the foot cast was removed. New separation of the medial (inside) portion of the hoof was detected. Removal of the damaged tissue was necessary Tuesday night.

Barbaro is continuing to eat well and is otherwise stable, but more aggressive treatment is being used on the left hind foot.

As of Tuesday, Dr. Richardson noted that the comfort level with the foot has been good since the procedure by Dr. Morrison.

Dr. Richardson said that radiographs taken on Monday of this week indicated improved alignment of his coffin bone and continued healing of the fractured right hind pastern region.
